Hearing from God
How does God speak?
Through His Word:
In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven Hebrews 1:1–3.
In this passage from Hebrews, we see 2 distinctive eras that God has spoken in:
the past and the present.
the past and the present.
How has He spoken during these times? The past was the prophets, the current is through Christ.
I know that there are times and seasons when we feel far from God, like He is giving us the cold shoulder. I would like to submit to you for careful consideration that God has not stopped speaking to us, but rather we have stopped listening to HIM.
Through His Spirit:
As we consider God speaking to us through His Holy Spirit, I want to disarm the folks in the room who may not be well acquainted with the Holy Spirit or understand how the Spirit moves. When I say that God speaks to us through the Holy Spirit, I am not referring to the manifested presence of God, but instead the Spirit of God that comes to live within the heart of every person who calls Jesus King.
The Holy Spirit often uses “impressions” to get our attention.
Often, an impression from the Holy Spirit will communicate knowledge that is the opposite of what our minds think or our senses tell us.
-
“So my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the common people for registration by families” Nehemiah 7:5
-
While Paul preached in Lystra, there was a man in the audience who had been lame since birth. Paul “saw that he had faith to be healed” Acts 14:9
How can I tell when it is God speaking?
Through His Word:
-
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
-
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1.
-
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14.
Through His Spirit:
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.” John 16:13–15.
